It’s no secret that events, conferences, and trade shows of all kinds have been rapidly cancelled or rescheduled with many question marks surrounding their return. Many of these shows, if postponed, have been pushed back until the third and fourth quarter of 2020 — some even into the beginning of 2021.

Exhibitor Magazine released an insight report on the total impact of this pandemic on our industry. They surveyed both corporate exhibit managers and suppliers to the trade show industry to research the overall numbers and sentiment surrounding the current and future of the events industry. Over 1,000 unique respondents gave feedback with this survey to give just a small peek into the “post-COVID crystal ball”.

We’ve read through the 18 page report and here are our important takeaways:

  • Only 13% of responding exhibit managers say they will definitely participate in events rescheduled for later in 2020
  • 59% of exhibiting companies anticipate returning to show floors by the end of September 2020
  • ⅓ of trade show vendors/suppliers have pivoted to meet the new COVID-19 recovery demand by manufacturing everything from personal protective equipment (PPE) to temporary structures used for testing, treatment, mobile offices, and more. Many trade show companies are preparing for reopening by developing plexiglass and other barrier solutions.
  • 46% of trade show vendors/suppliers have had to furlough staff, 43% have had to lay off employees
  • Only 20% of exhibit managers report that their budgets have stayed the same
  • It’s a toss-up whether or not that exhibit managers will exhibit at events that have been rescheduled for later in 2020, showing nearly equal parts of responses across the board
  • With many options like digital events coming to the forefront, 59% of exhibit managers said that “Virtual events are adequate, but not as valuable” as live events. 
    • One quoted saying “Thus far, it looks like online trade shows are a lot of work with relatively little return on investment.”
